The Importance of Bike Fit and Position

Which bike is the best? The answer is the bike that FITS you the best. For those who are shopping around for new road or tri-bikes, I would urge you to keep an open mind and not wed yourself to a specific brand or model. In the end, having a high end $5000 plus bike that doesn't fit will ultimately do you no good as you get passed by a cyclist on a huffy. If ...

To Aero or not to Aero

I have been a firm believer in the benefits of aero helmets since I purchased one in 2005 and have always worn mine to race (all distances). Ironically, as I watched this year's Ironman World Championships online, I noticed that both Chrissie Wellington and Craig Alexander (both of whom defended their titles) did not wear aero helmets. As a result, I think a lot of triathletes should take a lesson from this and ask themselves, ...

Congratulations to DFP Marathoners!

Congratulations to all the marathoners yesterday! It was very cold and I'm sure that it was hard to get going. To all the Detroit Iron members that race yesterday, you guys rocked it out and made our team proud yesterday!

On another and somber note, it is incredibly sad to here the news of the three men who passed away yesterday during the race. I personally view our endurance sports as a celebration of life ...

Mandatory Cyclist Licensing - Anti-Cyclist Sentiment

I read a great article on Bicycling.com's website called License to Ride by Bob Mionske. He has a road rights blog there that helps defend a cyclist's right to the road that was won in 1880. All quotes below are from the article.

The article talks about issues of road rage in Toronto resulting in cyclist's deaths and the introduction of new licensing restrictions for cyclists including mandatory licensing, helmets, liability insurance, and other restrictions. ...

2009 Ironman World Championships Results - Kona

This was passed on to me by Freedland (don't you post here?) so I'm putting it out there. I missed the race on Saturday and these provide a great recap right from the source!:

Men's Results
Craig Alexander becomes only the fourth man to repeat at the World Championships. Lieto has a great race to hold on for second.

Women's Results
Chrissie Wellington breaks the course record on her way to the win with an ...

How Anyone Can Finish their first Triathlon - TnT

My Story
It all started back in the 80's when I was young and saw Ironman Kona on t.v. I told my mom right then that I was going to do an Ironman. I ran track and cross country but ended up losing that dream (or so I thought) in college when I stopped working, gained 55 pounds (to be fair I did start at 165 as I was in cross country), and started being ...

an interesting study on Ironman recovery

Check out this article. It's a few years old but the findings are pretty cool. Although muscles take a couple weeks to recover after Ironman they found that other physiological factors (blood pressure, heart rate, etc) are fully recovered only 3 days after the race. They also found that athletes with faster race times tend to recover faster than people with slower race times. The researchers were all surprised to find the faster-than-expected recovery times. ...

Good luck to all of the Metro-Detroit triathletes doing Ironman Wisconsin this coming Sunday. I would like to specifically wish good luck to the following Detroit Iron members:

There are a whole bunch of Michigan triathletes doing IM WI that you can see by going to the Ironman Participant Search

I also have to wish a ...

Aero bars vs. traditional road bike set up

I was wondering how many people on this site use an aero bar set up vs. a traditional road bike. When I did my first sprint I noticed a few, but not many, aero type set ups. Maybe the majority of them were doing Olympic distance? It seems like it is not necessary/needed for sprint races, but since I have never used them I would like to know how people set their bikes up and ...

Studies show Ibuprofen is a bad idea for Endurance Athletes

Alright, to give credit where credit is due, I first found this on the EverymanTri blog. I then followed the links and did some more research on the studies and articles. (A funny side-note is the ad included in the article on this site is for Ibuprofen)

If you've been a triathlete for any amount of time, you "know" that anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDS) like Ibuprofen (aka Vitamin "I") helps with reducing inflammation and pain during ...
