Piedmontese Beef - The New Chicken

For those of you in the Metro-Detroit area that haven't heard of Piedmontese Beef, why haven't you been to Red Coat???!!? This great tavern on Woodward in Royal Oak not only introduced me to the Piedmontese hamburger but it also has great beer.

Beef? Hamburgers? Have I gone crazy and fallen off the nutrition bandwagon? Well, maybe... but it's not because of Piedmontese beef!

Per piedmontese.org, Piedmontese beef was:
Evolved in the Alps Mountains of ...

Tri-ing to Lose Weight?

All of us have let ourselves go at times, some a bit more than others. Or perhaps, you never had anything to “let go of” in the first place. Regardless of the situation, we all know that eating healthy and exercising is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. If you have decided that now is the time for you to get in shape, there are literally thousands of resources available to ...

Count Your Calories for Weight Loss

Since Ironman Lake Placid in July, I've gained a fair amount of weight. Being a near genius, I've linked this to overeating and inactivity. ;) I've gotten back into working out and lifting weights but eating is a big part of the weight loss. My goal for Ironman Wisconsin next year? Lose 30+ pounds (yes, I've gained that much).

My good friend Dr. Freedland sent me a ...

Cold Weather Nutrition on the Bike

My last two long rides in these cooler temps have really been bad. During those rides I used the same nutrition I used on the bike all summer, but it just doesn't seem to be working the same. I've heard that your body burns more calories during exercise in cooler temps. Is this true and if so, roughly how much more do I need to consume? I typically consume 230 calories per hour on the ...

Nurtition "quick tip" #1: Antioxidants

I thought this thread of quick tips could be useful. Not all nutrition knowledge needs to be gleaned from a lengthy article... and I don't feel like writing that much all the time. So here's the deal, if you have a snip-it of nutrition information, post a quick tip and share some supporting information or a link.

Tip 1: Eat foods that are high in anti-oxidants. Endurance athletes experience more oxidative stress than most people ...

Low Glycemic Index Meals Improve Performance

Here's a little food for thought:

Low gycemic index foods help you control cravings, and reduce your risk of diabetes (one of the biggest epidemics sweeping the world). If that isn't enough, it also improves your physical performance! Although I don't have access to the full article, the available abstract sets up the study and gives the conclusion that low glycemic index meals 45 minutes before a workout improve performance and stamina. You can check ...

Night Before Race: Whole wheat or white pasta?

This discussion stems from the night before my first Ironman where I'm making myself some whole wheat pasta. I was asked if I was making whole wheat pasta and told that I should be eating white. Well, it freaked me out for a minute but then I figured I would be fine as I always eat whole wheat pasta. Anyway, it got me thinking so I was looking around to find out why white pasta ...

Losing Weight while Training

Would you like to lose weight while training for triathlons? I'm sure many of us would as it not only makes us look and feel better, we get faster (i.e. pushing less weight around). There are of course extremes where you're going to lose too much and start losing muscle or don't take in enough calories, which will definitely hurt your performance, but we're talking about healthy weight loss.

You have to definitely eat right ...

Top 8 Race Fueling Mistakes Made by Ironman Athletes

I read this great article on The Top 8 Race Fueling Mistakes Made By Ironman Athletes by Ben Greenfield on trifuel.com. There are some very good points there but the one that I haven't heard of before is below:

"#1: Mixing sugars. This was the biggest mistake and caused more trouble than anything else. Without getting into the science of it in this post, let's just say that fructose sugar is "selfish" and very easily ...

Infinit Nutrition

I haven't actually made the plunge and ordered Infinit yet. Any suggestions on the formula for long-distance (i.e. ironman)? I've tried out a couple of different formulas from people on long rides so I know it will work for me. Just looking for some direction. I'm thinking a little protein, amino acids, moderate amount of sodium, and light flavor. maybe a higher amount of calories so I can use it as a concentrate mix and ...
