First Ironman Approaching: Seeking Advice from the Veterans!

Postby Ashley » Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:35 pm

My first Ironman race is just 13 days away (so exciting that I’m no longer counting weeks, but now days!). If you could give me only one piece of advice, what would it be? Thank you!

Hi

The work is done. Now is the time to know you have prepared yourself. Relax and make the most of your taper. Taper is to recover and rebuild muscle strength. Doing one xtra long ride won't help now just make you tired. You have come a long way. Visualize your race. Set your strategy in your mind. Tell yourself overe and over. I worked, I'm ready. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the day. You are stepping into a very special community of people.

Be Healthy, Train Smart, Have Fun

FYI, the previous poster is following @DetroitTri (puts our posts on Twitter). You can find him at http://www.twitter.com/coachprs and follow his posts.

I'm far from a veteran but here's what I learned from my 1 Ironman. You're going to have challenging times in the Ironman where your stomach hurts, you feel sick or something else isn't right. Work through it and know that you're going to be better. Don't let it get you down.

Also, another tip I got from another competitor while I was on the run. It's going to hurt whether you walk or whether you run, so you might as well run!
