My hands are numb!

Postby Pharmguy » Wed Dec 30, 2009 1:37 pm

I am in desparate need of a bike fit. A friend of mind told me about a store in Dearborn called Jack's. Does anyone know if this is a reputable store or should I look elsewhere?

I've never heard of Jacks. I've heard good things about a bike fitter on a store on Orchard Lake... The name is escaping me right now but I'll see if I can get it from Stuart (are you on here Stuart???)

Also, I know many people that have received a Power fit from Tony at Fraser Bicycle and have been happy. They give you a fit based on where you'll get the most power and be the most comfortable. If you check them out, let them know Jared from Detroit Iron sent you.

Also, are you riding with gloves? I know a lot of triathletes forgo gloves for training but it's really a good idea. Gloves with a gel insert help with going numb and keep you from getting road rash. We had a guy, Bora, who got some pretty bad road rash on a crash so we're all wearing gloves now.

On longer rides I take breaks from my hands to shake them out. Another good tip on longer rides is to put your hand behind your back and reach up in between your shoulder blades for 15 seconds while you're riding. This helps to stretch out your arms and get the blood moving in your hand.

Good tips, thanks. I do not use gloves but it's worth a try. I talked with 2 people who received a bike fit at Jacks and had no issues so I made the appoinment. I also need to be fitted for bike shoes so I can get it all done in 1 trip and do my part for the economy. :D

Let us know what you think. It would be great to have a vendor review for them based on your fit experience here on the forum!

Bike fit at Jacks went well. Actually, there is a part 2 coming up. They decided the bike frame is too big for me so Im reaching and putting too much weight on my arms/hands. So, I ordered a new post that has a bend in it that will get me about an inch closer to the handlebars.

I have never had a fit before so I dont have any reference but I liked them alot. They took there time, did all the measurements, inputed into some computer system and we went from there. Try this, a little of that. He talked me into aerobars but he waved the fit fee so it was a wash. Nice place!
