2009 Ironman World Championships Results - Kona

Postby jared » Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:29 am

This was passed on to me by Freedland (don't you post here?) so I'm putting it out there. I missed the race on Saturday and these provide a great recap right from the source!:

Men's Results
Craig Alexander becomes only the fourth man to repeat at the World Championships. Lieto has a great race to hold on for second.

Women's Results
Chrissie Wellington breaks the course record on her way to the win with an impressive 08:54:02. Mirinda Cafrae ran a 2:56:51 marathon that broke Wellington's previous run course record to pass 7 women on the marathon and place second overall.

Wrap Up
Motivational stories from the day. There's never a lack of motivational people doing an Ironman!

That was a great race on Saturday. Suspenseful in fact! I didn't think Lieto could hold on as long as he did. But at around mile 16 I started to think he might hold on to win. I was really pulling for the guy. I think next year he will probably take it out harder on the bike to give himself a bigger lead. Never know what next year will bring though.

Ok, I can think of one thing next year will likely bring... another Chrissie Wellington victory. Man is she amazing. It was almost surreal to see her suffer a bit in the marathon. That's the first time I've seen her struggle... of course struggling for her is a relative term.

But Carfrae?! Holy crap, did she sweep through the rest of the field!
