Gym-less strength training

Postby Damon » Tue Oct 06, 2009 10:47 pm

I apologize for not having content yet but I will soon. The point of this post is to discuss what your options are for strength training. You don't have to have a gym membership to get stronger (except for a pool maybe). Some stretch cords, a few dumbbells, a step and your own weight is about all you need to build strength where you need it most. Some exercises to consider (and I'll expand on these):

-push-ups plus
-rope/stretch cord "pull ups"
-box jumps
-reverse lunges
-side-stepping with stretch cords
-swim-style lat pulls (w/stretch cord)
-suitcase lifts
-arm curl, shoulder press
-tricep extension (using couch or coffee table)
-calf raises

Ok, like I said, I'll be back to explain these exercises and tell how they can help you develop strength without heading to the gym!

I'm not sure of the exact cost, but I think p90x may be a little pricey. However, theoretically, you could just ask someone who has it to copy the dvds for you and also make copies of the training logs and stuff. Of course, I would never condone such illegal actions on this forum, but it is hypothetically possible.

But I do recommend the p90x workouts. For me, it was great to have a detailed program to follow since I don't really know what I'm doing when I go to the gym for weight training. Didn't require me to buy any equipment other than a pullup bar and some stretch cords. We did most of the workouts at a gym though where they had free weights we could use. I felt like it was great preparation for IM training.

I would say definitely don't copy the dvds as we're not trying to rip off a great product like P90x (seriously, it's good).

How about asking someone like Mike or me to borrow our P90x and try it out, though. If you like it, you can buy it yourself or at least incorporate some of the exercises into your routine.

I may take you up on that Jared. I found that it is about $40 per month for 3 months plus $30 for s & h. Yes, and the pull-up bar and stretch cords.

I've heard nothing but good things about the program.

Yes, hypothetically, one could borrow a copy of PX90 from me and see what they think of it.

Have you guys seen this yet? It's put out by Beach Body fitness as well. I watched an infomercial. It looks pretty good. It's called Insanity and it doesnt use any equipment. Looks like a hard plyo and core workout.

That looks pretty good. I think it's the same company as P90x, isn't it?

This looks exactly like what we need for triathlon training.
