Piedmontese Beef - The New Chicken

Postby jared » Thu Dec 17, 2009 12:43 pm

For those of you in the Metro-Detroit area that haven't heard of Piedmontese Beef, why haven't you been to Red Coat???!!? This great tavern on Woodward in Royal Oak not only introduced me to the Piedmontese hamburger but it also has great beer.

Beef? Hamburgers? Have I gone crazy and fallen off the nutrition bandwagon? Well, maybe... but it's not because of Piedmontese beef!

Per piedmontese.org, Piedmontese beef was:
Evolved in the Alps Mountains of north-west Italy - the area known as the Piemonte, which means "foot of the mountain" - the Piedmontese breed is a natural for the production of lean tender beef.

So it' s a lean breed of beef from Italy that's naturally lean. What's so great about it?

Piedmontese beef has LESS calories, fat, and cholestoral than skinless chicken and it has MORE protein! - reference Fairway Packing

This is huge! No longer do you have to feel bad about eating beef or eating that hamburger!

But there's a catch, isn't there? Don't we have to drive to Montana to buy it and it's $26 a pound? No, you can buy locally and it is very reasonable!

Fairway Packing located in Eastern Market in downtown Detroit is a great place to get Piedmontese beef. Not only can you get hamburger but you can also get steaks and other meat. They sell a 10 lbs. box of patties that are pre-made in quarter pounds (4 to 1 lbs.) or third pounds (3 to 1 lbs). Cost is $30. That's $3 a pound! A great price for an excellent product.

Stop by Fairway Packing (check their website for hours) and pick up a box. Tell them Jared from Detroit Triathlon sent you.

This beef really is great! We buy it often and use it for everything. Of course hamburgers, but we also use the beef for tacos, spaghetti sauce, lasagna, or anything else that uses beef in a recipe. Just a correction to Jared's information though, the pre-made patties come in 1/2 pound or 1/3 pound patties, not 1/4 pound. We buy the 1/3 pound patties and there are about 150 calories per burger. YUMM!

We even made meatloaf with it, which was awesome. Yeah, I know. Meat loaf... but it's great with this beef. Next big meal with piedmontese beef for us is some healthy chili. Chili usually uses pretty bad beef with lots of fat but it's awesome with this beef.

Jared and Holli,
Speaking of meatloaf, chili, tacos and the rest, wait til you taste it with the Wildtree herbs and spices. This stuff is great too. I look forward to party!
