Count Your Calories for Weight Loss

Postby jared » Thu Nov 19, 2009 12:22 pm

Since Ironman Lake Placid in July, I've gained a fair amount of weight. Being a near genius, I've linked this to overeating and inactivity. ;) I've gotten back into working out and lifting weights but eating is a big part of the weight loss. My goal for Ironman Wisconsin next year? Lose 30+ pounds (yes, I've gained that much).

My good friend Dr. Freedland sent me a spreadsheet to start counting calories but I used my good friend Google to find something online and free. I found a free online calorie and activity tracking website Fitdaythat does a good of letting you search for foods and keep track of your calories. I wish they had a few more foods and the site is far from perfect but they do allow you to add custom foods so it makes it much easier.

They even let you figure out what your calorie burn is each day, although I think it's a little high, so you can plan out how many calories you eat each day. Add to that a breakdown of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and alcohol, and you get a good idea of what you're taking in each day. Hint: limiting the alcohol intake is also a big part of the weight loss.

I'll put out another post on my progress and other things I'm doing.

Jared:

Good for you. I have turned my celebration dinner of wings and beer for finishing my sprint into a weekly event, minus the sprint. Eating poorly is certainly counter productive.

Yeah, it's easy to let it go too far. I usually find it happens with me after a big race. You have so much anticipation and focus on that race and then when it's over, I tend to lose focus. For me I need to make short term goals and work towards a fitness level.

I see you signed up for Detroit Iron. I look forward to keeping each other motivated in this upcoming season.
